From the very beginning, women have had an integral part in playing, singing, and popularizing the blues. Sometimes these women recorded, performed, and became famous. Other times they may have just played on their front porch while tending the children, passing on their music in that way. In both cases they had a strong influence and an important role in developing and carrying on the tradition. This class will feature blues women of the past with videos and discussion, and blues women of the present as special guests to talk about their lives and demonstrate their music. From Bessie Smith to Koko Taylor, Memphis Minnie to Bonnie Raitt to blues women of today, join this exciting class as we enjoy the vast contributions women have made to the blues - the foundation for popular American music. This is a class for guys, gals, and music lovers of all ages!
