"Proof of Life"—a term often used in hostage situations or in precarious situations—is also a reminder of the healing properties of community, the earth, and the arts. The term indicates where a wellness check is necessary to ensure an individual is alive and faring well. Poetry is an artform that gives witness to the life that is lived. Poetry is an expression of life, of living, and of the ways we give proof of life. Ritual making is at the core of the practice of a poet who creates work that illustrates proof of life. This writing intensive will consist of immersive, hands-on poetry-making activities that are conducive to genuine community-building established through grounding exercises that will start and finish each activity.  During the final days of the workshop, participants will create artistic broadsides featuring their poetry.
