Gabriel Furtado (The Nightjars) is a West Philadelphia–based guitarist and singer rooted in the traditions of American string-band music. A driving rhythm player with a clear, high-tenor voice, Gabriel brings bluegrass grit, old-time pulse, and folk storytelling to every stage he steps on. With The Nightjars, he explores the deep well of American roots music, honoring tradition while stretching its edges with fresh arrangements and original tunes and songs.
Though classically trained, Gabriel found his musical home in traditional music after two decades of studying classical guitar. In his late twenties he turned seriously to bluegrass guitar, a discipline that now forms the backbone of his technique: steady right-hand drive, crisp articulation, and an ear for ensemble interplay.
Recent appearances include the Kimmel Center, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, Chris’ Jazz Café, and the Sellersville Theater. Alongside performing, Gabriel is a dedicated teaching artist, maintaining a private studio and working with families from Philadelphia and beyond through Carnegie Hall’s Lullaby Project.
