Have you always wondered what those numbers people call out in jams mean? Tired of asking your neighbor for the chords to a song, or even the key? A strong foundation in music theory can make a world of difference in your ability to navigate a bluegrass jam, and learning the basics is a lot less intimidating than it might seem. This course will provide students with a better understanding of the rudiments of music theory as it pertains to traditional music, focusing on the underlying rhythmic, harmonic and melodic structures of bluegrass and old-time. Students will learn about the Nashville number system, the relationship between accompaniment and lead playing and introductory improvisation concepts throughout the course of the week. Music Theory for Bluegrass and Old-Time is open to students of all skills levels and instruments.
