Do you hate scales? This class will change your mind. Learn how to get the most out of scales!
Everyone knows you should practice them. Very few people actually enjoy doing so. In this session, we'll start with the major scale. We’ll learn four basic 'patterns' for playing major scales on the mandolin. Then, we'll quickly move wayyyy past that into a discussion of different types of scales. We'll learn about the chromatic scale, natural, melodic and harmonic minor scales, pentatonic and blues scales, be-bop scales, the modes of the major scale and ‘symmetrical’ scales like the diminished and whole-tone scales.
Most importantly though, we’ll learn how to use these scales when we improvise or compose tunes of our own. As we learn each scale, we’ll have the chance to put it to use in class, ‘jamming’ along with a ‘virtual band’ in Bluegrass, Blues, Swing and other musical contexts.
By the end of the week, your ‘melodic toolbox’ will be well stocked and you’ll know how to access the right scale at the right time anywhere on your fretboard.
