Max. 8 students, ages 16 and up.

Using traditional jeweler’s saw frames and blades, students will be introduced to proper methods of sawing metal shapes from the outside of the shapes as well as creating more complex shapes by removing metal from the inside of the shapes (piercing). We will use 20-gauge copper but students may bring their own metal if they choose. Students may choose from 2 or 3 jewelry projects.

Beginners will learn blade selection, metal preparation, designs, transfer techniques for those designs, how to put the blades into the saw frame and properly tension the blades and how to cut the metal.  The instructor will demonstrate, but most time will be spent with students working and being guided to improve their technique.

For students with more experience but who aren’t totally comfortable, individual coaching and lots of hands-on practice will be happening as well as lots of nuances and tricks for successful results.

Further topics include: when you can get away with using scissors, when you may file something you are sawing, how to hold tricky or very small shapes, and sawing on three-dimensional forms. Time permitting, additional topics include how certain sawing tricks can help you with soldering set ups or tab and slot construction of larger fabricated metal objects.

NOTE: Sandals or open types of shoes are not permitted. The classroom has safety glasses, but bring your own safety glasses if you can. The instructor will bring copper sheets for purchase, as well as tools for use and purchase.

Lab fee: $10 for use of consumables.

Materials fee will depend on student choices.

Students should bring:

  • Closed toed shoes
  • work apron
  • sketch book
  • cash for supplies
  • sheet metal you want to use, like 20-gauge copper, brass, bronze, or sterling
