Young musicians with at least two years of experience will dive deep into what makes bluegrass go.
Limit 25 students, ages 9-14. NOTE: Workshop runs Periods 2 and 3. Students revert to parents during lunch after Period 2.
Calling all young pickers ready to dig deeper into the roots. Rising Pickers is an immersive bluegrass band experience designed for young musicians with at least two years of experience on their instrument. Any traditional string band instrument is welcome.
At Traditions Week, we’ll explore what makes bluegrass tick — how a band listens and locks in, how rhythm drives the music, how harmony singing lifts a chorus, and how the Nashville Number System helps us speak a shared musical language. We’ll work on ensemble skills, stage presence, and the joy of making music together — all in the spirit of preserving and passing down traditional American music.
This isn’t just about learning tunes. It’s about learning how to be in a band — how to support, how to lead, how to listen, and how to belong.
Students will collaborate throughout the week and may have the opportunity to share their work in an informal showcase performance.
Audition required for the purpose of determining the student’s skill level. You will receive a link upon registration.
Come be part of the next generation carrying the tradition forward.
Students are encouraged to enroll in other workshops during the day, and are particularly urged to enroll in the Period 5 jam classes to put into practice the skills learned.
Schedule a week or two, or three! Or, just sprinkle some classes in between other commitments.
