Sara Rollins is a born-and-raised West Virginia girl, with roots deeply planted in Appalachian culture. As someone who grew up running barefoot through the woods surrounding her family’s property, she easily took to hiking and camping as her most valued pastimes. In 2016 she decided to combine the two and go on her first backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail (AT). That three-day trip turned into several small section hikes on the AT over the span of a few years until 2019 when she attempted to do a flip-flop thru hike. She ended her attempted thru hike after completing 1500 miles of the 2192 mile trail. With time at home to soak in the lessons of her five-month trek, she shifted her goals to continue section hiking the parts of the trail she hasn’t completed yet by 2026, taking a decade to complete her journey.
