Hailing from Nithsdale in Dumfriesshire, Michael Muir developed his distinctive fiddle style first with classical training from one of the region’s leading teachers, Michael Stubbs, and then migrated towards the folk scene thanks to the thriving folk music community in the local village of Moniaive. He gained his first ceilidh band experiences alongside members of the prolific local groups “Two Left Feet” and “The Back Room Band,” from whom he learned much about playing Irish and Scottish folk music, and now plays with his own bands “Three Men and a Box,” and recently formed “Muckle Spree” with long-time piper friend, Ollie Rigg. The duo play folk tunes firmly rooted in the Scottish tradition with a contemporary sound, and Michael provides driving guitar accompaniment as well as tunes on the fiddle.
Michael has extensive teaching experience and developed his relaxed teaching style by tutoring Glasgow Universities’ Celtic Music Group from 2010. Since then he has regularly taught workshops and individuals, including at Edinburgh’s Scots Music Group, and has played ceilidhs and gigs at home and abroad from Kirkton to Kazakhstan!
