African Dance
This class precedes the African drumming class and will teach the rudiments and nuances of African and African-American traditional dance. The class will include people of all ages and abilities. Period 2 ~ Jumoke and Kibibi Ajanku of the Sankofa Dance Theater
Celtic Dance: A Ceili
Join us for a Ceili as we learn step dances, line dances, and a little song from the Celtic nations of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany. There will be something for everyone and all skill levels are welcome. Sean Nos (Old Style Irish), Scottish Highland, Cornish Jig, and Welsh Clog steps will be taught along with Breton Line Dances and more. No experience is necessary and Instructor Marsha Searle is skilled at breaking down the steps and making them fun and accessible to all, from those who are the earliest beginners to providing a challenge for experienced dancers. (No special footwear required) Marsha has been teaching and performing professionally for 15 years, is a championship Scottish Highland Dancer, has a BA in World Dance, and loves sharing her love for Celtic culture. Join us for a fabulous time in this celebration of Celtic traditions! Period 1 ~ Marsha Searle
Southern Appalachian Flat-Footing and Clogging
Come and learn how to keep time with your feet in a class that captures the feel of an old-time music and dance party. Come and learn the beautiful art form of Appalachian Flat-footing and clogging that developed in the Appalachian Mountains when African American, Scots-Irish, and Native American people met and shared their rhythms, music, and dance. Instructor Marsha Searle will share steps she has learned from over 15 years learning, performing and teaching with master teacher Eileen Carson, and well as teaching improv and new steps from this living tradition. Marsha is skilled at breaking down the steps and making them fun and accessible to all, from those who are the earliest beginners to providing a challenge for experienced dancers. Clogging and Flat-Footing
Learn from the best. Join this father-daughter instructor team who have danced internationally. Rodney Sutton is an early member (‘72) of the legendary Green Grass Cloggers, the North Carolina dancers who in the 1970’s ignited a firestorm of clogging amidst the renewed interest of old-time stringband music. This dance revival took Appalachian clogging from its staid and mechanical mode back to the “old-time way” with self-expression and individualism at its core. Students will be taught the basics of both Green Grass Clogger/Footworks steps along with Kelsey sharing modern contemporary clogging steps. Students will also learn traditional solo mountain step-dance, known as flat-footing. You will be taught how to improvise using the Robert Dotson Walking-Step - allowing you to become a foot-drummer to any kind of music. Learn these joyous dancing styles that allow you to express yourself. While any kind of shoes can be used, hard-soled shoes (leather is best) with low heels are preferred for percussive dancing. You will need a wood floor by at least 3 ft X 3 ft to dance on if possible. A piece of plywood on carpet also will work. Period 5 ~ Rodney Sutton, Kelsey Sutton
Honky Tonk/Cajun/Country Two-Step & Waltz
Enjoy a fun class every day where you learn the basic dance steps and moves that people revel in throughout America on Friday and Saturday nights. Whether it be honky-tonk, Cajun, country two-step or waltzing, you’re going to be dancing. No experience necessary. Period 4 ~ Rodney Sutton, Kelsey Sutton
YogaRhythmics
This class provides a joyous approach to strengthen the mind/body/spirit connection. Participants will be instructed to align with the seven energy areas of the body (chakras) associated with yoga. A structured sequence of natural movement patterns serve to open, energize, and integrate these areas and provide greater energy flow and joy within the body. The rhythms of dance, creative movement and frequent use of multicultural music play into a dynamic and fun experience of self-expression. This is for all bodies and requires no prior knowledge of experience of yoga or dance is needed. Leave the class with an increased sense of joy, freedom, fitness, flexibility, and energy for a busy life. Students should bring a yoga mat and water. Period 2 ~ Marya Michael

Whether your inspiration is the grace and style of Fred Astaire, the hard-swinging jazz sound of Jimmy Slyde, or the passion and precision of Savion Glover, tap dance has much to offer. A profoundly unique American dance form with a long and complex cultural history, tap spans many musical and cultural eras, and is as vibrant today as it was a hundred years ago. Whether you are a casual student or a dance aficionado, the technique that encompasses tap will delight, challenge, and inspire you. Tap shoes or leather soles recommended but not required. A close cousin of American tap dance, flatfooting and clogging are a blend of Irish, African Diasporic, and Native American Indian dances. While tap dance is often associated with swing and jazz music, flatfooting and clogging have close ties to Appalachian old-time music. We will explore improvisation, phrasing, musicality, and economy of motion to acquire a solid foundation of rhythmic building blocks. Great for students of any level; from beginners who want an introduction to advanced dancers who want to hone their technique, facility and repertoire. Leather-soled shoes recommended but not required. Period 5 ~ Matt Olwell
