A totem is a sacred object the sometimes takes shape as a spirit being of a symbol that conveys respect and trust. A totem is often regarded as a talisman or conductor of good spirit. The world is very much in need of positive energy. The work in this class is meant as a creative collective voice of healing. Join us as we use AfroFutrism as a lens to build new world totems and investigate intriguing West African history.

Limit 20 students, ages 16 and up.

Students should have:

  • styrofoam balls (1 per totem; find at Amazon or your local craft store)
  • Brown Paper Market bag (free) or Natural Kraft paper (smallest package, find at craft store)
  • decorative wire (electrical wire, available at Home Depot, Lowes)
  • short profile unfinished table leg (w/pre-installed hanger bolt), 1 per totem, available at Home Depot, Lowes
  • Weldbond All-Purpose Adhesive - smallest bottle, available at Home Depot, Lowes
  • Decoupage glue/sealer (clear matte finish) - 16 oz, available at craft store; art supply store
  • Brush for decoupage
  • Brush indigo dye tint
