The Celts loom large in history, culture and many fads of our time. This class is a lecture/listening/viewing/discussion course exploring the history, music, dance, and culture of the “Six “Celtic Nations” - Brittany, Cornwall, Ireland, Isle of Man, Scotland, and Wales. From the ancients of Roman and Greece all the way to Brexit, we’ll explore the political influence of the Celts. Along the way, we’ll bash myths, learn about Celtic innovation, marvel at the mysteries surrounding Celtic culture and enjoy centuries of music and dance. A police chief who saved Irish music, the mosquito that destroyed the independence of Scotland, a Queen who ordered that all bards be hanged and their harps burned, the Spanish origin of Celtic DNA – the story of the Celts is compelling, maddening, fascinating, mysterious and very much with us in contemporary times.
