This course will examine the role of art and music in history as a response to social realities and as a component of the formation and sustainability of civil movements. We will consider the potential influence of Art on society, and the creative impulse as a component of being human and a force of self-definition in the face of suffering and confusion. We will spend a fair amount of time looking at the Civil Rights Movement and the music that informed it. We will also explore visual arts, theatre, and sculpture and consider the significance of individual artists including Bernice Johnson Reagon, Rodin, Agosto Boal and others. Through group exploration, students will gain a clearer understanding of the relationship between activism, art, and the struggle for social justice in the modern world.
