Anyone who watched Amanda Gorman perform at the most recent presidential inauguration knows that poetry can bring us immense hope. All art has the power to save us. It can heal wounds, it can bridge the gap between enemies, it can save your life. In this class we will look at poems that acknowledge pain and difficult times but offer a final message of hope. Poems that show there is a life beyond suffering. We will read and discuss poems from a variety of writers who have used their poems to try to offer an answer to troubles of the world. We will also view videos and read articles that discuss the importance of art as a method of healing. Finally, there will be a short writing period, with guided prompts, where students will try to write their own poems of hope.
