Set your mind, body, & soul free by exploring the great outdoors with some iconic writers before crafting your own words inspired by nature's vast canvas. Our primeval connections with nature have never been more essential as we seek solace from the isolating confines of screens to rediscover those sensory connections that remind us that we are alive. From Henry David Thoreau's woods, to Langston Hughes's rivers, John Muir's forests, and Rachel Carson's "silent springs," writers of the past have modeled how nature satisfies humanity's needs for both scientific discovery & spiritual connection. Poets & songwriters from all times & cultures rely on nature's archetypal symbols to convey meaning. For educators, we also discuss how experiential, outdoor learning has proven to reduce stress & anxiety for all of us. In this class, we study a wide range of genres, styles, and time periods before applying hands-on writing exercises that simply require a notebook and a good pair of shoes for outdoor musings.
