Students will learn the history of the writing system: major scripts, modes, and styles. There will be novice level brushwork and lectures on the Chinese culture. Students will be helped to understand the relationship between traditional Chinese arts and Chinese culture. They will have the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of classical Chinese brush writing. By the end of the course, students are expected to gain a better understanding of Chinese culture through concrete experience of traditional Chinese arts.

Limit 12 students, ages 18 and up.

Approximate materials cost: $50-$60.

Students will need the following materials:

  • 2 brushes, one with hair length of approximately 3.5 cm and one with hair length of approximately 4.5 cm (see photo below for examples of size reference). Example of a set of brushes available HERE on Amazon. NOTE: If you are unable to obtain the exact size, brushes with approximately sized hair length will work as well.
  • Chinese Xuan paper, available HERE on Amazon. Select the 34 x 68 cm size.
  • One bottle of Chinese calligraphy ink, available HERE on Amazon
  • One ink stone, found HERE on Amazon
