Expand your musical horizons past those basic chords and a couple of different strum patterns.
Know some basic chords and a couple different strum-patterns, but feel like you’re stuck playing the same old songs? Then this class is for you! After finding out how far along the class is, we’ll review the basic fundamentals as necessary, and go from there. Primarily playing – but not limited to – traditional styles of music (like Folk, Old-time & Blues), we’ll explore both fingerstyle and flatpick playing styles. In fingerstyle we’ll start with simple pattern-picking accompaniment and then survey the 3 main styles of solo fingerstyle playing: alternate-bass, “classical-style” counterpoint bass and blues-style “Dead Thumb” bass. Flatpicking: we’ll start with “strum-pattern” and “bass & strum” (boom-chicka) accompaniment. Then we’ll look at “Carter Scratch” and fiddle-style solo arrangements. Time permitting, we’ll take a quick peek at “Lead Guitar” playing, and the scales (pentatonic and modes) you can use. Since there are so many things we could do, and only 5 classes, class consensus will help guide what we cover. There are lots of e-handouts (in both notation and tablature) for the class, and a couple companion books are available.
