“Abstract art is art that does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a visual reality...” Kandinsky
Departing from detailed realism but still observing nature, this class will offer opportunities to experiment. Starting from realism, loosing up to an Impressionist style using birds, animals, and nature. Looking at details in feathers, flowers, tree branches and bark, create abstract works in soft pastels, charcoal, or mixed mediums. Working indrawing/painting techniques starting with gesture, contour, moving into color observation as seen in Impressionist works. Advanced students can work in larger formats, on alternative papers, under-painting with watercolors and pastels to create works in alternative styles. Demonstrations: abstract gestures, using black paper with color or lack of color (white), drawing/painting motion, up close, macro details create abstract images. Students complete 3-4 finished paintings during this week.
