Academic Credit at Common Ground on the Hill
Academic Credit at either the graduate or undergraduate level may be earned through participation in Common Ground on the Hill’s Traditions Weeks. Dr. Pamela Zappardino (zapinator@aol.com ) is Common Ground’s Academic Credit Coordinator and she will be happy to guide you though this process. That said….
Credits at Common Ground are handled a little differently than the regular "course" framework
that you may be familiar with.
Our classes/workshops aren’t like typical semester offerings where each one is 3 credits (or 4 credits in the case of some Undergrad programs.) Credit is awarded for overall participation in Common Ground Activities. In order to earn 3 credits during either Traditions Week I or Traditions Week II, you should register for a full-time schedule of classes – 5 periods per day – and plan on participating in evening activities as well: concerts, dances, lectures, etc.
You may elect to attend both weeks of workshops and may choose to earn three grad or 3-4 undergrad credits per week. *If you wish to earn fewer than these standard credits in a week, you contact Dr. Zappardino (zapinator@aol.com) about specific requirements and will need to complete your registration by telephone.
You will be assigned an Instructor of Record who is a member of the McDaniel College Faculty and who will supervise your work. S/he will also assign additional work in the form of reflections, papers, readings, and/or products to be completed after the Traditions Weeks are over and s/he will also assign a grade for your work.
Undergraduates may earn credits in English, Art, Music or Interdisciplinary Studies for an additional $125 per credit beyond the Common Ground fees, while Graduate students may earn credits in English, Art, Music, Education, or Humanities for an additional $150 per credit. Credit designation is based on your workshop selections and your Instructor of Record will also be assigned on this basis. If your workshops span two or more of these areas, you may focus your follow-up work in the area in which you would like your credits designated.
Credits are awarded by McDaniel College and are generally transferable to other institutions. You should check with your own institution if you have questions about transferability. Teachers may apply credits earned toward continuing education requirements and should check with their school districts as to reimbursement policies. Most will reimburse for credits earned through Common Ground.
If you are a Carroll County Public Schools Employee, you must contact your HR Department for authorization prior to registering with Common Ground.
If you wish to earn academic credits, please fill out the appropriate sections of the registration form and include the credit fees with your payment to Common Ground. You will receive more specific information shortly after you complete your Common Ground Registration.
Do not contact or submit payment to McDaniel College directly.
By agreement, Common Ground administers registration and fee collection for all Traditions Weeks credits.
